Abstract

The study assessed concentrations of cadmium, chromium, iron, and manganese in soil and vegetation at Oke-Odu dumpsite, Akure South, Ondo State, Nigeria. Using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), soil and plant samples were analyzed for heavy metal accumulation. Results showed higher pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter in dumpsite soils compared to control sites. Heavy metal concentrations ranged from Cd (0.50–0.99 mg/kg), Mn (4.65–6.93 mg/kg), Cr (0.69–0.98 mg/kg), and Fe (197.97–976.50 mg/kg). Iron exceeded WHO permissible limits, posing health risks through bioaccumulation in vegetation. The study recommends avoiding agricultural use of dumpsite soils and consumption of vegetables grown nearby.
