Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the effectiveness of tetanus toxoid immunization in reducing neonatal mortality in rural communities, with a specific focus on ASA Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria. Neonatal tetanus remains a significant cause of neonatal deaths in low-resource settings, and the World Health Organization has identified immunization as a critical intervention to prevent this preventable disease. The study aims to assess the immunization coverage, the impact of tetanus toxoid vaccines on neonatal health outcomes, and the barriers to immunization uptake in the region. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 200 pregnant women and mothers with infants in ASA Local Government Area. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, focusing on socio-demographic characteristics, immunization coverage, neonatal health outcomes, and barriers to immunization. The results indicated that while a majority of the women received at least one dose of tetanus toxoid during pregnancy, fewer completed the recommended two doses. Neonatal mortality was found to be significantly lower among those who received the full dose of tetanus toxoid, highlighting the effectiveness of the vaccination in reducing neonatal deaths. Barriers to immunization included limited access to healthcare services, lack of awareness, cultural beliefs, and logistical challenges such as vaccine availability. The study suggests that improving immunization coverage through community-based health interventions, health education campaigns, and better healthcare infrastructure could significantly reduce neonatal mortality in rural communities. This study provides evidence supporting the effectiveness of tetanus toxoid immunization in preventing neonatal tetanus and emphasizes the need for targeted strategies to increase vaccination uptake and improve neonatal health outcomes in rural Nigeria.
