EFFECTS OF GRADED PERCENTAGE FORMULATED BANANA PEEL (MUSA CAVENDISH) FLOUR DIET ON REPRODUCTIVE HORMONES IN SERUM OF NORMAL WISTAR ALBINO RATS
Abstract
This research was designed to study the effect of feeding graded percentage formulation
of Banana (Musa cavendish) peels flour incorporated into the normal rat chow to Wistar
albino rats, ad libitum for a period of 30 days. The animals were sacrificed after the
experimental period and blood collected and prepared for analysis to evaluate the levels
of reproductive hormones in the serum of the experimental animals. This study was
carried out to determine the levels Of FSH, LH, Prolactin, Testosterone and Estradiol in
rats fed percentage formulations of Banana peels flour. The insignificant slight increase
in levels of FSH, LH, Prolactin, Testosterone and Estrogen were found in all the
experimental groups when compared with the control group. After the study, it was also
observed that the male hormones-testosterone increased significantly, when compared
to the group 1 animals, indicating that the reactive oxygen species that culminates into
oxidative stress. was effectively neutralized by endogenous metabolic mechanisms that
inhibited adverse effect on the Synthesis and secretion of the male sex hormones. For
the estradiol levels, there were elevated levels in all the experimental groups, indicating
that there was a prevalence of free radical from the exposure to toxicity. Estrogen has
been shown to possess direct free radical scavenging properties at high concentrations,
to enhance the activity of some naturally occurring antioxidant enzymes (particularly
glutathione peroxidase), and to function as a chain-breaking antioxidant in vivo. Results
obtained from this research has led to the conclusion that feeding graded percentage
formulation of Banana peels flour incorporated into the normal rat chow to Wistar
albino rats, ad libitum for a period of 30 days was safe and of nutritional benefit to the
experimental animals. Thus dried ground Banana peels could be used to fortify diets to
alleviate micronutrients malnutrition.
