PROXIMATE AND ELEMENTAL COMPOSITION OF TRICHOSANTHES CUCUMERINA AND SOLANUM LYCOPERSICUM
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Solanum lycopersicum is one of the most commonly known while trichosanthes cucumerina is less known and called snaake tomato. These two species The tomato were grown in the small garden at shehu wunti housing estate maiduguri road bauchi. Standard analytical procedure were employed in the experimental analysis. The results obtained showed that: proximate analysis. Moisture(29.70), ash (34.50), crude lipid (1.12), crude fibre (1.96), protein content (0.31) carbohydrate (32.41). elemental analysis showed that the two species contains magnesium (2.7 ppm) were observed in other sampled areas. Another sample showed protein (1.70%), carbohydrate (2.90%), and crude fibre (1.6 ppm), indicating variability across locations. Qualitative results revealed that snake tomato is a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, magnesium, and phosphorus. The proximate composition suggests that the fruit’s lower moisture content enhances its suitability for storage and transportation, potentially extending its postharvest shelf life.
