PREDICTORS OF POST-UTME/SCREENING RESULTS IN LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Abstract
ABSTRACTS
Individual university conducts entrance examinations and admission into their various universities. This decentralization of university admission brought about numerous problems among which were multiple admission of a student at the detriment of other students who have not gained admission, irregularities and malpractices. This study investigates whether O’level score, Jamb score, Gender and State of admission candidates are predictors of Post UTME/Screening result in LAUTECH Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Secondary data was collected from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology. Ogbomoso, Oyo State. Descriptive statistics for the data set were carried out. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) test and Durbin Watson were used to test for multicollinearity, autocorrelation, heteroscedasticity respectively in the data set. The dependent variable (Post UTME/Screening result), is then regressed on the independent variables which are O’level score, Jamb score, Gender and State.
The assumption of linearity holds as the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent variable appears linear. The VIF shows that multicollinearity does not exist since the VIF of all the independent variables are less than 10. The Durbin-Watson value (1.806) is approximately to 2 which implies that autocorrelation does not exist in the data set. The studentized Breusch-Pagan test result (p-value = 0.5266) indicates that there is no violation of homoscedasticity, meaning the variance of the residuals is constant. Significant variables in the model are O’level score, jamb score and State while the variables that is not significant is Gender.
From the study, O’level score and Jamb score contributed positively to Post UTME/Screening result while some other variables contributed negatively to Post UTME/Screening result. Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) as a standardized test will be recommended to be the only test for admitting students into higher institutions because it has been proved to be a major factors contributing greatly to Post UTME/Screening results.
