USING LINEAR PROGRAMMING MODEL (NORTH WEST CORNER METHOD) IN PREDICTING THE EFFICIENCY OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN CALABAR
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Using linear programming North West Corner method to predict waste management in Calabar. With the aim to solve the transportation problem using special methods. In a transportation problem a product is transported from several numbers of sources to a number of destinations at the minimum cost. Participating, our present study brings clearly the necessity of using quantitative techniques for managing waste. The first step in the study comprises of data generation. Questionnaires were formulated and distributed amongst respondent to 10 transfer station in Calabar South, Ekpo Abasi, Cross River State. A theoretical perspective undertaken for the present study review the various different applications of linear programming. The characteristic of base assumptions of linear programming and its advantage and disadvantages towards establishing its need for
optimization were briefly outlined in terms of its application to waste management. An objective function was created or carried out in terms of decision on variable cost of transportation of waste from transfer station to disposal site daily using quantitative available data of these parameters. Linear programming model for minimizing cost of treating waste and cost of transporting solid waste from transfer station to disposal site was developed. The model equations with an objective function and constraints were solve using simple method and North West Corner method. Finally, some conclusive observation have been drawn and recommendation have been suggested.
