Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the impacts of deforestation on ecological systems in Ogbomosho North Local Government Area, Oyo State, focusing on four specific objectives. Through a descriptive research design and analysis of 100 questionnaires, the study explores factors contributing to deforestation, its impacts, consequences, and essential strategies to minimize it. Survey findings reveal that agricultural activities, urban expansion, illegal logging, climate change, and ineffective policies contribute significantly to deforestation. Moreover, deforestation is found to exacerbate climate change, soil erosion, disruption of water cycles, habitat loss, and increased natural disasters. While it affects the availability of natural resources, its impact on local livelihoods varies, with some perceiving positive effects and others negative. The study underscores the importance of mitigating deforestation for environmental sustainability, with respondents expressing familiarity with existing strategies and advocating for the enforcement of stricter regulations. Forty percent believe in the effectiveness of these strategies, while others express skepticism or uncertainty. In conclusion, this research provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics of deforestation in Ogbomosho North Local Government Area. By identifying key contributing factors, impacts, consequences, and potential strategies, it contributes to the understanding of deforestation's ecological ramifications and informs efforts to mitigate its adverse effects on the environment and local communities.
