POWER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT USING CAPACITOR BANKS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Power quality is a critical factor in modern electrical power systems, as poor power quality can result in inefficiencies, equipment damage, and operational disruptions. Among the various methods to enhance power quality, the use of capacitor banks has emerged as a highly effective and economical solution. This Project explores the role of capacitor banks in improving power quality by addressing issues such as voltage regulation, power factor correction, harmonic mitigation, and reactive power compensation. Capacitor banks enhance the stability and reliability of power systems by reducing voltage drops, minimizing transmission losses, and improving overall energy efficiency. Their deployment helps maintain a balanced and steady voltage profile, thereby optimizing the performance of connected electrical loads. Furthermore, the integration of capacitor banks is instrumental in addressing power factor lag caused by inductive loads, significantly reducing penalties imposed by utility companies and enhancing system efficiency. The study highlights the design considerations, placement strategies, and control mechanisms required for the effective operation of capacitor banks in diverse applications. Real-world case studies and simulation results are presented to demonstrate the tangible benefits achieved in industrial and commercial power networks. By leveraging capacitor banks as a cost-effective and sustainable solution, power systems can achieve enhanced operational efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and compliance with power quality standards. This research underscores the potential of capacitor banks as a key technology in the pursuit of reliable and efficient power systems, catering to the growing demands of modern electrical infrastructures.
