Abstract

The increasing demand for reliable and sustainable energy in tertiary institutions has necessitated the exploration of alternative power sources. This study focuses on the construction of a solar-powered system for the Physics Department at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), as a solution to the challenges of unstable electricity supply. The primary objective of the project is to design and implement a cost-effective and efficient solar energy system capable of powering essential laboratory equipment, lighting, and office facilities within the department. The methodology adopted involves site assessment, load analysis, system design, component selection, and installation of key elements such as photovoltaic (PV) panels, charge controllers, inverters, and battery storage units. The system was carefully sized based on the department’s energy requirements to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Performance evaluation was conducted to determine the system’s efficiency, durability, and ability to provide uninterrupted power supply. Results from the study indicate that the solar-powered system significantly improves energy availability, reduces dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuel generators, and minimizes operational costs over time. Additionally, the system contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and promoting the use of renewable energy. The study concludes that solar power is a viable and sustainable solution for energy challenges in academic environments. It recommends wider adoption of solar energy systems in other departments and institutions to enhance energy security, support research activities, and promote green energy practices.
