Abstract

Abstract This study examines the impact of selected monetary policies on financial sector development in Nigeria from 2010 to 2022. As the financial sector is essential for economic growth, understanding the influence of monetary policy—such as interest rate adjustments, reserve requirements, and credit controls—becomes critical for promoting stability and development. The study employs a quantitative approach, utilizing secondary data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other financial institutions. Key indicators of financial development, including banking sector growth, credit to private sector ratios, and stock market capitalization, are analyzed to assess the effectiveness of these monetary measures. Through econometric modeling, the research investigates the relationship between monetary policy instruments and financial sector development indicators, identifying both the direct and indirect effects of policy changes. The findings reveal that policies like interest rate adjustments and reserve requirements significantly impact credit availability and liquidity, thus affecting overall financial sector performance. The study also identifies challenges in policy implementation and the resulting implications for economic stability. Recommendations are made for the CBN and policymakers to enhance financial sector resilience, considering the dynamic global economic environment. This research contributes to the literature on monetary policy effectiveness in emerging economies and provides insights for policy formulation aimed at strengthening the financial sector.
