Abstract

Infant feeding practices among HIV-positive mothers are influenced by various factors, including maternal age, education, socio-economic status, cultural beliefs, and availability of resources. This study aimed to examine the factors influencing the choice of infant feeding options among HIV-positive mothers attending the Federal Medical Centre, Owo. A descriptive research design was used, and data were collected through a self-structured questionnaire from a sample of 101 HIV-positive mothers. The findings revealed that while many HIV-positive mothers demonstrated autonomy in decision-making regarding infant feeding, significant barriers and constraints persisted, including maternal health conditions and challenges in balancing work responsibilities with breastfeeding. Family members and healthcare infrastructure also played crucial roles in influencing feeding decisions. Recommendations include providing tailored support services, implementing supportive policies for working mothers, adopting a family- centered approach to care, strengthening healthcare infrastructure, developing community-based programs, and advocating for supportive policies. Further research is recommended to explore the lived experiences of HIV-positive mothers and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in promoting optimal infant feeding practices. Keywords: Infant feeding, HIV-positive mothers, maternal factors, infant factors, health system factors. Word Counts: 165
