DESIGN AND INSTALLATION OF 3KVA SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM IN THE DEPARTMENT OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY, ABIA STATE POLYTECHNIC, ABA
Abstract
In Nigeria presently, electrical power generated presently is grossly insufficient in
terms of meeting the power demand in the country. Presently, the Computer
Engineering Technology department of Abia State Polytechnic depends solely on
the central diesel generator for the School of Engineering building which comes
on late in the morning and goes off early in the evening daily. Therefore, there is
a need for an alternative power supply system to reduce over-dependence on the
utility grid. This project proposes supplementing a 3KVA power supply system for
powering the departmental laboratories, lecture halls, and offices by adding solar
panels to the system. Based on load calculations for the department, the system
requires a 3KVA power inverter that converts power from deep cycle batteries
into AC power. The batteries will be recharged by the solar panels which would
be installed. The design procedure adopted
includes various sizing calculations used to determine the required power rating
of the solar panels. The results from the research for this project show that this
solar installation can be used to complement the power supply for the department
of computer engineering technology, especially during power outages and
downtimes of the central generator.
