Abstract

ABSTRACT The increasing environmental concerns associated with conventional plastics have sparked interest in developing biodegradable alternatives. This project explores the potential of groundnut shell, an agricultural waste, as a feedstock for bioplastic production. Groundnut shell is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, making it a suitable substrate for bioplastic synthesis. Through the combination of organic chemicals and biotechnological approaches such as starch extraction, suspension preparation, gelatinization, etc., the aim is to turn groundnut shell into a biodegradable and compostable plastic. The bioplastic solubility was tested using various solvents, including sulfuric acid, acetone, ethyl alcohol, and acetic acid. Additionally, a soil degradation test was conducted to evaluate the bioplastics biodegradability. The results showed that the bioplastic is partially soluble in some solvents and exhibits significant weight loss in soil, indicating its potential for environmentally friendly disposal. This study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing groundnut shell as a sustainable feedstock for bioplastic production, offering a promising solution for waste management and reduction of environmental pollution.
