Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the effects of religious activities on undergraduates at Benue State University, Makurdi. The specific objectives were to examine the academic effects of religious activities on undergraduates, assess the social effects, explore the individual impacts, evaluate the economic implications, and ascertain the health effects of religious activities on undergraduates at Benue State University, Makurdi. A cross-sectional survey research design was employed. The population of the study was 22,773 students, with a sample size of 400 students selected. Cluster and purposive sampling techniques were used to select respondents. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed quantitatively. The findings revealed that religious activities impact students' academic performance, social life, personal lifestyle, economic situation, health status, and mental well-being. The study recommended that universities incorporate education about the influence of religious activities on academic performance; community members, parents, and other stakeholders should be sensitized on these effects; universities should screen for students excessively involved in religious activities and refer them for guidance and counseling. Additionally, educational programs and awareness seminars about the impact of religious activities should be regularly conducted in Nigerian universities to help manage and balance students' involvement in such activities.
