GCMS CHARACTERIZATION, ANTIFLAMATORY, ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF DAMBURNEYA CORIACEA
Abstract
The plant Damburneya coriacea was used for this study, the leaves were air-dried, blended and then extracted using Soxhlet extraction method with ethanol as the solvent. Photochemical analysis was then carried out on the extract which showed the presence of tannis, saponins, flavonoids, phenols and sterols. Mueller Hinton agar medium was used to test the antimicrobial activity of the extract against various pathogenic microorganisms like Methicillin-resistant aureus, Vancomycin resistant enterococci, Campylobacter jejuni, Helicobacter pylori, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Candida krusei. The zones of inhibition were determined and at varying concentrations, the ethanol extract showed resistance to methicillin resistant aureus, vancomycin resistant enterococci, campylobacter jejuni, helicobacter pylori and candida albicans. Ethanol extract have MICs of 2.5 μg/m and 5.0 μg/m, respectively while the MBC/MFC are 5.0 μg/m and 2.5 μg/m, respectively. Antioxidant test were carried out in the laboratory using ABTS and DPPH and the extract showed great antioxidant potential when compared with a standard antioxidant (vitamin C). Anti-inflammatory activity assessment, inhibition of protein denaturation and membrane stabilization property was used to determine its anti-inflammatory potentials and it showed excellent anti-inflammatory results after comparison with diclofenac which is a standard anti-inflammatory drug. For GC-MS analysis a small amount of concentrated extract was dissolved and the GC-MS analysis was carried out using a GC-MS equipment that was equipped using a non-polar column.
