EFFECTS OF MORINDA CITRIFOLIA ETHANOL EXTRACT IN HEPATO FUNCTIONAL BIOMARKERS ON STREPTOZOTOCIN INDUCED DIABETES MALE RATS
Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia, insulin resista
nce, and impaired insulin secretion; this is a condition that occurs either when the pancre
as does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin i
t produces. Liver dysfunction is a complication of diabetes, leading to severe health issu
es. Morinda citrifolia (noni), a tropical plant, has been used in traditional medicine to trea
t diabetes; its ethanol extract has antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties, which is mos
tly used to study its effects on liver function in diabetic rats. Research studies have been
shown to apply the usage of streptozotocin to investigate diabetes related effects on org
ans and tissues, its toxicity to insulin producing beta cells, leading to hyperglycemia and
diabetes-like symptoms. Morinda citrifolia ethanolic leaf extracts on the hepatic structur
e and function in hyperlipidemia rats fed with streptozotocin.
