Abstract

The effect of leachate intrusion at a major dumpsite was investigated in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. A total of four (4) Electrical Resistivity Tomography profile lines using the Wenner electrode configuration were used toinvestigate the effect of leachate intrusion at the dumpsite. The electrical resistivity field data was interpreted using RES2DINV software. ERT 1shows the model comprising of low resistivity anomalies, the leachate plume had seeped from the surface, and might likely have seeped deeper into the aquifer. ERT 2 indicates low resistive anomaly in a deep blue color is an evidence of leachate contamination plume originates from the surface.ERT 3 shows low resistivity anomalies whose value ranges from 6.27Ωm to 61.3Ωm,the anomaly is an indication of leachate contaminant plume which occur at a horizontal distance of 35 to 98m towards the direction of the study area. ERT 4 shows low resistivity anomaly evidence of migration from the northwestern side to the southeastern side of the area. The ERT surveys were able to describe the depth of the contaminant plumes; thereby providing useful information for the managemnent and monitoring the extent of contamination on the site;therefore Government should enforce strict environmental protection laws that will prohibit indiscriminate disposal of solid waste material from domestic and industries.
