DETERMINATION OF THE MINERAL CONTENT OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF BITTER KOLA (GARCINIA KOLA) SEED
Abstract
The mineral composition of the ethanol extract of bitter kola (Garcinia kola) was carried out in this study. The seed used for the analysis was collected from New Market in Enugu State. Prior to the analysis, the seed was peeled, sliced and dried under shredded sunlight. The dried seed was pulverized and extracted with absolute ethanol and the extract was used for the analysis. The extract contains essential minerals, including iron (0.032 mg/L), zinc (0.431 mg/L), magnesium (0.673 mg/L), manganese (0.148 mg/L), potassium (0.271 mg/L) and sodium (0.201 mg/L). These minerals play crucial roles in various physiological processes, such as oxygen transport (iron), immune function and antioxidant activity (zinc), and muscle and nerve function (magnesium). Additionally, manganese supports bone formation and reduces inflammation, while potassium and sodium maintain electrolyte balance, essential for cardiovascular health. Although the mineral concentrations are relatively low, bitter kola’s composition can complement dietary intake, potentially enhancing its value as a functional food. The extract’s mineral content suggests its use in supporting cardiovascular health, immune function, and metabolic processes. However, it may serve more effectively as a supplementary source of minerals rather than a primary provider.
