Abstract

The determination of the phytochemical composition of Dennettia tripetala seed was carried out. Samples of Dennettia tripetala seed were obtained from a local dealer at New Market, Enugu State. The sample was washed, dried and pulverized into powder. The powdered seed sample was suspended in ethanol and was filtered after 24hrs using Whatman No. 1 filter paper. The extract was concentrated and used for the phytochemical analysis. From the result of the analysis, Dennettia tripettala seeds contain alkaloids, polyphenol, tannins, phlobatannins, saponins, flavones, glycosides and steroids. Quantitatively, the constituents were found in moderate concentration. The extract constitutes alkaloids (8.0%), saponins (7.0%), steroids (0.491mg/l), glycosides (0.008mg/l), tannins (0.401mg/l) and flavones (0.0771mg/L.35%). These compounds as seen above possesses various biological and chemical significance as most of them represent anti-agents to the treatment of human infections and diseases. With these observations, the extraction and characterization using a suitable equipment (such as GC-MS, HPLC and FTIR) will be essential for further studies as it will standardize the use of the Dennettia tripettala seeds extract for clinical investigations and pharmacological applications.
