EFFECT OF VIRTUAL LEARNING ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF PHYSICS STUDENTS IN OGBIA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF BAYELSA STATE
Abstract
Abstract
This study investigates the effect of virtual learning on the academic achievement of physics students in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The increasing integration of digital technologies in education has transformed traditional teaching methods, making virtual learning a vital tool in science education. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, with a sample of secondary school students selected from various schools within the study area. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and students’ academic performance records.
The findings revealed that virtual learning significantly improves students’ understanding of physics concepts, enhances engagement, and positively influences academic achievement. The use of virtual laboratories and simulations was found to aid in the comprehension of abstract concepts, which are often difficult to grasp through conventional teaching methods. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, lack of access to digital devices, and limited technical skills were identified as factors affecting the effective implementation of virtual learning.
The study concludes that virtual learning has a significant positive effect on the academic achievement of physics students. It recommends that government and educational stakeholders invest in ICT infrastructure, provide training for teachers, and promote blended learning approaches to maximize the benefits of virtual learning in secondary schools.
