NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION OF AFRICAN CUSTARD-APPLE (ANNONA SENEGALENSIS)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
African custard-apple (Annona senegalensis) is an indigenous fruit widely consumed across sub-Saharan Africa for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. This study evaluates the nutritional composition of the leaves to highlight its potential contribution to human nutrition and food security. Proximate analysis revealed that A. senegalensis fruit contains appreciable levels of carbohydrates, dietary fibre, and essential minerals, with moderate amounts of proteins and lipids. The fruit pulp is particularly rich in vitamin C, calcium, potassium, and antioxidants, which support immune function and metabolic processes. The seeds also contain significant levels of oil and protein, making them a potential source of plant-based nutrients. Findings from this research indicate that African custard-apple is a nutrient-dense food capable of enhancing dietary diversity, particularly in rural communities where it is readily available. Its rich phytochemical profile further underscores its relevance in traditional medicine. Therefore, the fruit holds promising value for nutritional improvement, food product development, and health promotion. Further research is recommended to explore its bioactive compounds and industrial applications.
