A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT OF UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPING IN AFRICA: A CASE STUDY OF THE UNITED NATIONS MULTIDIMENSIONAL INTEGRATED STABILIZATION MISSION IN MALI (2015-2024)
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study critically examines the impact of United Nations peacekeeping operations on Mali’s security and stability between 2015 and 2023, with a focus on MINUSMA. The study’s objectives were to assess MINUSMA’s contribution to peace and identify how regional coordination influenced outcomes. The research adopted an ex-post facto design, using secondary data from UN reports, academic journals, and official statistics. Content analysis and descriptive statistics were applied to analyze the data. The findings show that while MINUSMA helped prevent state collapse, support peace accords, and stabilize key northern cities, it failed to halt the national spread of insurgency or achieve long-term peace. The study concludes that ineffective regional coordination among AU, ECOWAS, and G5 Sahel significantly undermined MINUSMA’s capacity. It recommends stronger mandate alignment, independent AU leadership, and more flexible operational design for future missions.
