Abstract

This study examines the role of ethical and professional standards in procurement practices within the Nigerian food industry, focusing on Nigerian Breweries Plc, Alakia, Ibadan. The research investigates the extent of adherence to international best practices, the factors contributing to unethical procurement practices, and the impact of these practices on organizational performance and stakeholder relationships. A mixed-methods approach was employed, using both quantitative and qualitative data collected through questionnaires and interviews. Findings reveal that while there is significant compliance with ethical standards, financial pressures, corruption, and weak regulatory frameworks contribute to unethical behavior in procurement. These practices have adverse effects on business reputation and financial performance. The study proposes a framework for improving procurement standards through self-regulation, stronger government policies, and external audits. It also evaluates existing mechanisms for ensuring ethical procurement and offers recommendations for policy enhancement, capacity building, and increased transparency. The study contributes to the body of knowledge by providing empirical evidence on procurement practices in the Nigerian food sector and offering a practical framework to improve ethical standards in the industry.
