THE ROLE OF COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES IN MITIGATING UNEMPLOYMENT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Unemployment remains one of the most pressing socio-economic challenges in Nigeria, affecting economic growth and social stability. Cooperative societies have emerged as important grassroots organizations that promote economic empowerment, job creation, and financial inclusion. This study examines the role of cooperative societies in mitigating unemployment by providing access to credit, supporting small-scale enterprises, and encouraging self-employment. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with cooperative members and stakeholders. The findings reveal that cooperative societies significantly contribute to employment generation by facilitating entrepreneurship and providing financial support to members. The study concludes that strengthening cooperative systems can play a vital role in reducing unemployment and promoting sustainable economic development.
