WOMEN AND PROPERTY INHERITANCE IN NIGERIA: A LEGAL REVIEW
Abstract
The topic under research is “Women and Property inheritance in Nigeria: A Legal Review” and so it goes beyond a mere determination of what the law says about women inheritance and touches on the actual working and operation of the law within contemporary Nigerian society. Women inheritance rights are an excellent place to begin a critical reexamination of Nigeria’s legal framework. Widows are beginning to come to public attention as a set of individuals who are particularly vulnerable in the face of HIV. As many AIDS widows have limited rights to inheritance, their ability to subsist in a land based economy is placed in jeopardy. At the same time, widows may play a pivotal role in provision for AIDS orphans and sick relatives as HIV incident rates continue to grow in Nigeria. Researching widows’ inheritance rights is therefore a necessary step in developing a holistic approach to combating the pandemic. In this spirit, this paper is an opening into the complex topic of widow inheritance in Nigeria.
