EFFECT OF MULTIMEDIA INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY ON MATHEMATICS STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ONNA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Abstract
The study investigated on the effect of multimedia instructional strategy as predictor for Mathematics students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Onna Local Government Area. The study was guided by three research questions and three null hypotheses. A quasi-experimental research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of all 2553 senior secondary school one (SS1) Mathematics students in the nine (9) public secondary schools in the study area. The sample for the study was 94 SS1 students. Simple random sampling technique was used for the selection. The instrument used for data collection was entitled “Mathematics Performance Test on Indices (MATI)” designed by the researcher. The instrument was validated by a mathematics lecturer and an expert in Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of Science Education, Akwa Ibom State University. A reliability coefficient of 0.86 was obtained for the instrument using Kuder Richardson formula-21 formula (KR-21). Mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions while independent t-test statistics was used for testing the hypotheses. The findings of this study showed that there is a significant difference in the mean performance scores of students taught the concept of indices using multimedia and conventional instructional strategies. The study also revealed that there is no significant difference in the mean performance scores of male and female students taught the concept of indices using multimedia instructional strategy. The result of the analysis further revealed there is a significant difference in the mean performance scores of male and female students taught the concept of indices using conventional instructional strategy. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that students’ academic performance depends largely on the instructional strategy employed by the teacher. It was recommended among others that teachers should employ multimedia instructional strategy in the teaching of Mathematics in senior secondary schools’ classroom to enhance students’ performance since the instructional strategy is student-centered based.
