Abstract

Diabetic nephropathy is an adverse complication of diabetes in which inflammation plays a key role in it progression. This study aimed at investigating the effect of sodium propionate on kidney inflammatory markers in high-fat-diet and streptozotocin-induced diabetic male Wistar rats. Thirty-two (32) male Wistar rats weighing (220 ± 20 g) were used. Diabetes was induced by intra-peritoneal administration of repeated low-doses of streptozotocin (30 mg/kg) after feeding the rats with high-fat-diet (HFD) for eight weeks. They were randomized into four (4) groups (n=8) and were treated for 4 weeks via oral-route of drug-administration. Control (CON), Control+ 200 mg/kg sodium propionate (CON + NA PROP), Diabetic (DM) and Diabetes + 200 mg/kg sodium propionate (DM + NA PROP). Feed and water intake were recorded daily. Body-weight and fasting-blood-sugar (FBS) were monitored weekly. At the end of the experiment, animals were sacrificed under ketamine-anesthesia (SO mg/kg), blood was collected by cardiac-puncture and kidneys were harvested for biochemical examination. Plasma insulin, kidney tissue inflammatory markers; tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-
