THE ROLE OF COOPERATIVE SOCIETIES IN STABILIZING FOOD PRICES IN NIGERIA
Abstract
Cooperative societies play a pivotal role in stabilizing food prices in Nigeria by
improving agricultural production and market access. However, they face
significant challenges such as limited government support, access to funding, and
capacity-building programs. This study aimed to examine the role of cooperative
societies in stabilizing food prices in Nigeria and to identify strategies for
enhancing their effectiveness. The study utilized a quantitative research approach
with a sample size of 87 respondents drawn from cooperative societies in Nigeria.
Data was collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using regression
models and mean statistics with the Likert scale (SA - 5, A - 4, UD - 3, D - 2, SD -
1). The regression analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between
cooperative membership size, access to inputs, and food price stability, with p
values less than 0.05. The mean scores for key strategies, such as collective
bargaining (mean = 4.2) and investment in storage facilities (mean = 4.1),
indicated high levels of agreement among respondents. Findings show that
cooperative membership size (p = 0.03), access to inputs (p = 0.01), and market
access (p = 0.02) significantly impact food price stability in Nigeria. Additionally,
strategies such as improved government support, increased funding access, and
capacity-building programs were found to be crucial for enhancing the
effectiveness of cooperative societies. The study recommends that the government
increase its financial support, invest in training programs, and create favorable
policies to enable cooperatives to thrive and effectively stabilize food prices in
Nigeria.
