EFFECT OF INSECURITY ON AGRICULTURAL OUTPUT IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the effect of insecurity on agricultural output in Nigeria. Over the years, Nigeria has experienced rising insecurity in the form of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and farmer-herder conflicts, particularly in rural areas where agricultural activities are concentrated. These security challenges have disrupted farming operations, reduced access to farmlands, and discouraged investment in agriculture.
Using secondary data and qualitative analysis, this research highlights how insecurity leads to reduced crop yields, displacement of farmers, increased food prices, and overall decline in agricultural productivity. The study finds that insecurity significantly affects both subsistence and commercial farming, thereby threatening national food security.
The paper concludes by recommending stronger security measures, government intervention, rural development, and policy reforms to restore stability and improve agricultural output in Nigeria.
