Abstract

ABSTRACT The effect of oral administration of ethanol leaf extract of Ceiba pentandra on total and differential white bood cell count. Fresh leaves of Ceiba pentradra were collected, and ethanol extracts were prepared. A total of twenty-five rats were used. The rats were divided into five groups: Group 1: Control. Group 2: Negative control (administered potassium bromate only). Group 3: Positive control (administered potassium bromate and treated with standard drug Vitamin C) Group 4: Low dose (administered potassium bromate and treated with 400 mg/kg of Ceiba pentandra leaf extract). Group 5: High dose (administered potassium bromate and treated with 800 mg/kg of Ceiba pentandra leaf extract) After a 14-day period, the animals were sacrificed, and blood samples were collected via cardiac puncture. WBC parameters were analyzed.Significant (P < 0.05) reduction in total WBC count in groups treated with Ceiba pentandra compared to negative control. Neutrophil count significantly increased (P < 0.05). Lymphocyte count significantly reduced (P < 0.05).Monocyte and eosinophil counts were similar to negative control.Ceiba pentandra significantly lowered total WBC and lymphocyte levels, suggesting potential value in managing disorders related to excessive WBC production.
