Abstract

7 Abstract The increasing demand for efficient energy management has driven the development of smart metering systems. This project focuses on the design and construction of a Smart Energy Meter integrated with GSM technology to provide real-time monitoring and remote communication of electricity consumption. The system is built around a microcontroller that continuously measures the energy consumed using a current and voltage sensors, calculates the total units used, and displays the data on an LCD screen. A key feature of the system is its GSM module, which enables automated transmission of meter readings to the utility provider and the end-user via SMS at predefined intervals or upon request. This eliminates the need for manual meter reading, reduces billing errors, and enhances transparency. The meter also includes features like overload detection, tamper alerts, and prepaid functionality, making it suitable for modern smart grid applications.
