THE EFFECT OF POOR WATER SUPPLY ON HUMAN HEALTH AT IKIRUN, IFELODUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OSUN STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Water is the most important element of life that is basic to man’s existence. Most researchers are discouraged from working on determination of water consumption rate in Ilorin due to inadequate and inadequate water channel data extreme, to know the hindrances of Ilorin local government in Kwara State. Hence, this study determines the rate of water consumption in Ilorin. 140 questionnaires related to water uses and demand were were randomly distributed to residential and 100 were administered on institutional, commercial and industrial consumers from high density areas (Ilorin), medium density areas (Oja-Oba, Tanke) and low density areas (Fate). Existing ground water well (via dug/pit) in Adewole, The result indicated that the more residential and commercial consumers source water from deep well, industrial consumers source more than water from boreholes while institutional consumers mainly depended on tap water for their basic needs. The total volume of water used daily per home for residential consumers in low density areas varied from 95-1235litres, the values of medium density area varied from 3465-11,578litres, while that of high density area varied from 345-27,868litres. The daily water for total volume of water consumed by commercial, industrial and institutional facilities were 4,623, 3,749 and 383 litres respectively. The average water demand for low, medium and high density areas were 33.51 lcd/pp, 39.32 lcd/pp, and 21.41 lcd/pp which is not within the range specified by WHO standard. It is recommended that the water pipe network should be extended to all nook and cranny of Ilorin township to allow continuous access to portable water.
