EROLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF T EGG DROP SYNDROME IN CHICKENS (ACTIVE IMMUNITY) IN MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE.
Abstract
Egg Drop Syndrome (EDS) is a viral disease of significant economic importance in the poultry industry, characterized by a sudden decline in egg production and poor egg quality. This study was conducted to investigate the serological evidence of active immunity against Egg Drop Syndrome in chickens in Maiduguri, Borno State. A total of 100 blood samples were collected from chickens of varying ages and sexes and analyzed using the hemagglutination (HA) test to detect EDS-specific antibodies. The results revealed that 70% of the samples were seropositive, indicating a high level of exposure to the EDS virus within the study population. Antibody titers ranged from 1:2 to 1:256, with the majority of samples showing moderate immunity levels (1:8–1:32), while a few exhibited high titers, suggesting strong immune responses. The findings demonstrate that a significant proportion of the chickens had developed active immunity, either through natural exposure or vaccination. However, 30% of the sampled population remained seronegative, indicating susceptibility to future infections. The study highlights the importance of regular serological monitoring, effective vaccination programs, and strict biosecurity measures in controlling the spread of EDS. It is recommended that routine screening and improved disease management strategies be implemented to enhance poultry productivity and reduce economic losses associated with Egg Drop Syndrome.
