THE PREVALENCE OF CERVICAL CANCER IN OGBOMOSO METROPOLIS USING BOWEN UNIVERSITY TEACHING HOSPITAL AS A CASE STUDY
Abstract
Cervical cancer is a leading cause of female morbidity in Nigeria. This retrospective cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of the disease and HPV strain-16 at Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Ogbomoso. Analyzing 40 histopathological samples from 2020–2024, the study found an 8% prevalence rate, with the highest risk among women aged 51–60. Squamous cell carcinoma and moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma were the most frequent diagnoses. Findings reveal significant gaps in awareness and screening access. The study emphasizes the necessity of targeted health education and strengthened community outreach to mitigate the regional disease burden.
