Abstract

This study assesses groundwater contamination using a 2D Wenner array method, with a case study focused on the River Road dumpsite in Ugbomoro Community, Warri. The aim was to evaluate the extent of leachate plume migration and its impact on the surrounding groundwater. Two profiles were conducted along the dumpsite, with resistivity values ranging from 24Ωm to 2058Ωm. Profile 1, spanning 90 meters laterally and reaching a depth of 25 meters, showed resistivity values ranging from 24Ωm to 820Ωm. Low resistivity zones (24Ωm to 42Ωm) were detected between 0.2m and 2.5m, indicating leachate contamination in the topsoil. Profile 2, extending 90 meters laterally to a depth of 15 meters, revealed resistivity values between 295Ωm and 2058Ωm. The first layer, with resistivity values between 1023Ωm and 2058Ωm, was identified as a sandy layer, potentially acting as a pathway for leachate migration. The second and third layers exhibited moderate to low resistivity, indicating sandy clay and clay formations. The study highlights that the leachate plume predominantly affects shallow layers, while deeper groundwater remains less impacted. The findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the 2D Wenner array in mapping leachate migration. The study recommends continuous geophysical monitoring and water quality tests to assess the ongoing impact of contamination on groundwater resourc
