FUNGAL CONTAMINATION OF DIFFERENT POULTRY FEEDS SOLD IN AZARE TOWN BAUCHI STATE.
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Fungal contamination in poultry feeds is a significant concern in the livestock industry, as it affects feed quality, animal health, and can lead to the accumulation of harmful mycotoxins in the food chain. This study was conducted to isolate, identify, and characterize the fungal species associated with poultry feed samples collected from different commercial sources. A total of five [5] poultry feed samples were randomly obtained from farms and feed retailers in Azare, Bauchi state. The samples were processed using standard serial dilution techniques and cultured on Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) under controlled laboratory conditions.Emerging fungal colonies were sub-cultured to obtain pure isolates and were identified based on colony morphology, spore structure, and microscopic characteristics using lactophenol cotton blue staining. The results revealed a diverse range of fungal genera including Aspergillus, Penicillium, Fusarium, Rhizopus, and Mucor. Among these, Aspergillusflavus and Aspergillusnigerwere the most frequently occurring species, both known for their mycotoxin-producing potential.
