Abstract

This study investigates the effect of representation policies on female political participation in Lagos State, with a case study focus on Oshodi‑Isolo Local Government Area. Using a mixed‑methods case study approach researchers collected primary data through questionnaires that were distributed to 83 female participants from different categories including officeholders and civil servants, party members, and other participants. However, 80 respondents returned their questionnaires. In addition, data was collected through in‑depth interviews with profiled key informants who were female political officeholders and party executives and community leaders. The frequency with percentage distribution methods on quantitative information while thematic analysis evaluated interview transcripts. The participants recognize representation measures but very few believe these initiatives receive appropriate communication or receive successful enforcement. The main obstacles to genuine political involvement stemmed from traditional cultural values alongside religious traditions and monetary limitations and weak internal party backing. Public support for women politicians exists while real political decision power remains limited because of inadequate policy execution and institutional hurdles. To enhance female political inclusion, the study recommends strengthening enforcement mechanisms for existing gender‑equity laws, instituting mandatory party quotas supported by funding for female candidates, implementing targeted capacity‑building programs, and increasing public awareness through strategic communication campaigns.
