Abstract

Abstract outh unemployment remains a pressing socio-economic challenge in Benue State, Nigeria, with r-reaching implications for the region's development. Despite the state's rich agricultural sources and human capital, high levels of youth unemployment persist, contributing to poverty, equality, and social instability. The causes of youth unemployment in Benue State are ultifaceted, rooted in both structural and systemic challenges. One primary factor is the limited dustrial base of the state, which fails to generate adequate employment opportunities for the owing youth population. Benue State's economy is predominantly agrarian, yet the agricultural ctor remains underdeveloped due to lack of mechanization, poor infrastructure, and insufficient cess to credit facilities. Additionally, the mismatch between educationaI outcomes and labor tarket demands exacerbates the problem. Many youths graduate with qualifications that are either relevant or insufficient for the few available jobs. Corruption and poor governance further hinder fforts to create a conducive environment for job creation, while the absence of functional ocational training centers limits the skill acquisition needed for self-employment. Youth nemployment has significant consequences for Benue State's socio-economic development.conomically, it leads to wasted human capital, reducing productivity and stalling growth.Jnemployed youth are unable to contribute to the state's economy through taxes and spending, eading to a cycle of poverty and reduced government revenue. Socially, the frustration and opelessness experienced by unemployed youth often manifest in increased crime rates, drug buse, and other forms of social unrest, which destabilize communities. This instability liscourages investments, further stuinting economic progress. Additionally, youth unemployment :xacerbates rural-urban migration, as young people leave rural areas in search of opportunities, lacing immense pressure on urban infrastructure and services. The gender dimension of inemployment is also notable, as young women often face greater barriers to employment, limiting heir economic participation and contributing to gender inequality in the state. Tackling youth memployment in Benue State requires committed efforts from policymakers, private sector stakeholders, and development partners. Transparent governance, investment in infrastructure, and he implementation of targeted policies that address the root causes of unemployment are essential.By prioritizing job creation, skill development, and economic diversification, Benue State can narness its youth population as a driver of socio-economic development. Failure to address this issue risks perpetuating poverty, inequality, and instability, undermining the state's long-term development prospects. Converscly, effectively addressing youth unemployment can unlock the economic potential of Benue's young population, fostcring inclusive growth and sustainable development
