Abstract

Medicinal plants remain vital sources of bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential against oxidative stress related disorders. This study evaluated the effect of aqueous methanol extract of Phyllanthus amarus (PAAM) on sodium oxalate induced hepatic lipid peroxidation in albino rats. Male animals were divided into six groups: Group I (control, water only), Group II (70 mg/kg sodium oxalate), Groups III and IV (70 mg/kg sodium oxalate + 100 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg PAAM, respectively), Group V (250 mg/kg PAAM only), and Group VI (70 mg/kg sodium oxalate + 500 mg/kg standard drug). Phytochemical screening of PAAM revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, and cardiac glycosides. Liver tissues were excised, washed, and homogenized in phosphate buffer, and the homogenates were analyzed for malondialdehyde (MDA). Sodium oxalate significantly (p < 0.05) elevated MDA, a measure of lipid peroxidation in the Induced group compared with the control, confirming oxidative damage. PAAM treatment produced a dose-dependent reduction in MDA. In conclusion, PAAM demonstrated potent hepatoprotective effects against sodium oxalate induced oxidative stress, supporting its traditional use in liver-related disorders.
