LIPID PROFILE MODULATION IN HEALTHY RATS ADMINISTERED METHANOLIC EXTRACTS OF ELEUSINE INDICA
Abstract
E. indica, a common weed in tropical regions like Nigeria, is traditionally used for treating metabolic disorders due to its rich phytochemical content, including flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds. This study investigated the effects of methanolic extract of Eleusine indica on the lipid profile of healthy albino rats to evaluate its potential as a natural hypolipidemic agent Methanolic extract was prepared from the leaves and administered orally to Wistar albino rats at doses of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 600 mg/kg body weight for 28 days. Plasma lipid parameters—total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and triglycerides—were analyzed using enzymatic methods, while low-density lipoprotein (LDL) was assessed as part of the objectives.
Results showed a dose-dependent modulation: significant reductions in total cholesterol (up to 30% at 600 mg/kg) and triglycerides (up to 40% at higher doses), alongside elevations in HDL cholesterol (p < 0.05 compared to control). No overt toxicity was observed, affirming the extract's safety in healthy models. These effects are attributed to the inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase and enhanced antioxidant activity, optimizing lipid homeostasis without disruption.
The findings suggest Eleusine indica methanolic extract holds promise for preventing dyslipidemia and supporting cardiovascular health, particularly in resource-limited settings. Recommendations include long-term studies, human clinical trials, and phytochemical standardization for pharmaceutical applications.
