Abstract

This project aims to improve the capacity of a renewable power system using solar panels, focusing on the Physics Department at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE) in Effurun, Nigeria. As the global energy landscape shifts toward sustainable solutions, the utilization of solar energy presents a promising alternative to conventional fossil fuel-based systems. The study involves the installation of a solar power system comprising 14 photovoltaic panels, 4 batteries, a 5 kW inverter, and a charge controller, designed to supply electricity to 24 offices within the department. A comprehensive methodology was employed to ensure the effective installation and maintenance of the solar power system, incorporating safety measures throughout the process. Detailed calculations were conducted to evaluate the system's power production capacity, efficiency, and battery life, along with ananalys is of the potential energy consumption of the offices. Additionally, a comparative cost analysis was performed to assess the economic viability of solar energy versus traditional diesel generators, highlighting both operational costs and environmental impacts. Results indicate that the solar power system can efficiently meet the energy demands of the offices, reducing reliance on diesel generators and providing a sustainable energy solution. The findings emphasize the benefits of solar energy in terms of sustainability, reduced carbon emissions, and long-term cost savings, while also discussing the challenges associated with energy intermittency and storage. Recommendations are provided to enhance the capacity of solar power systems, including the integration of advanced energy storage solutions and hybrid systems that combine multiple renewable sources. This project contributes to the broader discourse on renewable energy adoption in Nigeria, showcasing solar power as a viable alternative for sustainable energy production.
