Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigated the political and economic implications of the Russia-Ukraine war on Africa, with specific reference to Nigeria. The conflict, which began in February 2022, was reported to have triggered widespread disruptions in global trade, energy supply, and diplomatic relations, significantly affecting developing economies. Using a qualitative research methodology based on secondary data sources—including academic literature, official reports, and economic statistics—the research examined the impact of the war on Nigeria’s foreign policy decisions, food security, revenue generation, and economic stability. It was found that Nigeria experienced heightened inflation, increased food and energy costs, as well as foreign exchange volatility, largely due to its dependence on imports from Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, the war was said to have influenced Nigeria’s diplomatic posture, pushing the country to balance its strategic alliances with Western nations and Russia while protecting national interests. The study concluded that the crisis exposed Nigeria’s structural vulnerabilities, particularly its reliance on external supply chains and imported refined petroleum products. It was therefore recommended that Nigeria diversify its trade partners, invest in domestic agricultural production, and reassess its foreign policy to enhance national resilience again at future global conflicts. Key Words: Russia/Ukraine War, Political Implications, Economic Impact, Nigeria, Africa, Foreign Policy.
