THE DUTIES OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN BUSSINESS STUDIES CURRICULUM IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN NNEWI NORTH L.G.A, ANAMBRA STATE.
Abstract
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
In recent years the rapid advancement of technology, particularly in the realm of
artificial intelligence (AI), has brought forth transformative changes in various sectors,
including education. As artificial technologies continue to evolve, their integration into
educational settings have increasingly prevalent, offering new opportunities for enhancing
teaching and learning experience. Artificial intelligence (AI) Refers to the simulation of
human intelligence processes systems. This includes learning, reasoning, problem solving,
perception, and language understanding. AI aims to create intelligent machines that can
perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as visual perceptions, speech
recognition, decision making and language translation. Artificial intelligence can be defined
as a machine that is designed to carry out tasks that will require human intelligence to do.
According to Benhamou and Janin (2018), Artificial intelligence involves a collection
of technologies that enable machines to act with a very high level of intelligence similar to
humans. AI has emerged as a transformative technology with the potential to revolutionize
various industries, including education. In recent years there has been a growing interest in
understanding the impact of AI on students learning experiences. AI technologies such as
machine learning, natural language processing and data analytics, are being leveraged to
develop innovative educational tools and platforms that can enhance the way students learn,
engage and succeed in their educational pursuits (Robert, Potter & Frank, 2023). Artificial
intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the field of business studies by providing new tools and
technologies that can enhance teaching, learning and research.Artificial intelligence can
analyze student data and behavior to provide personalized learning recommendations and
interventions. This can help educators tailor instruction to meet the individual needs of each
student, leading to improved learning outcomes. AI can use predictive analytics to forecast
student outcomes, such as academic performance, graduation rates and career success.
Educators can use this information to identify at-risk students and provide targeted
interventions to support their success. According to Bessen (2019), Artificial intelligencebased
tools and platforms are being utilized for personalized learning, adaptive assessments,
intelligent tutoring systems and automated grading systems. These technologies aim to
improve learning outcomes, increase efficiency and provide tailored support to students.
2
Artificial intelligence powered adaptive learning platforms can adjust the difficult level and
pace of instruction based on a student’s performance. This can help students learn at their
own pace and address their specific learning needs. AI powered virtual assistants provide
students with instant feedback, answer questions and guide them through course materials.
These assistants can also assist educators in grading assignments, managing course material
and providing support to students. In an age where technology perpetually reshapes the
boundaries of learning and leadership, the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and
business studies heralds a new era of innovation.
Business Studies refers to the formal and informal processes of learning that equip
individuals with the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to succeed in various
aspects of business and management (Dahles and Brass, 2015). This definition emphasizes
the comprehensive nature of business studies, focusing on the acquisition of skills and
knowledge relevant to different domains within the business sector.
More so, business studies encompasses the academic discipline and practical training
that prepare individuals for careers in business related fields, providing instruction in areas
such as accounting, finance, marketing, management and entrepreneurship (Robbins, Coulter
and DeCenzo, 2017). This definition highlights the diverse areas of study within business
studies, covering both theoretical and applied aspects to equip individuals for business
careers. Business studies is a subject taught in primary and junior secondary schools with a
curriculum as a guide for teaching and learning.
Curriculum refers to the overall plan or framework that guides what is taught in
schools or educational institutions. It encompasses the content, objectives, structure and
learning experiences that students engage in a specific course or program of study. In the
context of business studies, the curriculum outlines the knowledge, skills and competencies
that students are expected to acquire in order to succeed in the field of business. Curriculum
may be considered in the broader sense as all the social and emotional experiences an
individual has in school as well as the academic learning experiences and achievements
suitable not only for the individual, but also for the society generally. Curriculum is
influenced by history, social and political concerns (Onojetah, 2013).
Akudolu (2011) states curriculum as planned objectives for learning, content to be learnt,
activities for learning the concept, delivery strategies for achieving the objectives, evaluation
to ascertain the extent the objectives have been achieved and the environment within which
learning takes place. This curriculum is predetermined, organized and sequentially arranged.

Curriculum planners will also find the outcome of this study beneficial. This is because the
findings of the study will educate them on how to make better plans towards effective
teaching of the content of business studies in public secondary schools. Curriculum is a
vehicle through which the school strives to achieve educational objectives. It is the life wire
of a school programme and it is a track that prepares students for their future life. In school
and colleges, curriculum is the heart of any educational endeavor, as it determines what and
how educational content should be taught.
Nation and Macalister (2010) define curriculum as a guidance in designing courses
that consists of outer cycle namely, principles, environment and needs that involve practical
and theoretical considerations that will have a major effect in guiding the actual process of
course production. According to the authors, the inner cycle consists of goals and its center,
contents and sequences, format and presentation, monitoring and assessment. The success or
failure of any educational system depends on the successful planning and execution of
curriculum. Hence scholars claimed that the wealth or poverty of a nation depends on the
content of the curriculum. Therefore, business studies curriculum planners would need to
develop a curriculum that will equip students with knowledge and skills.
Business studies curriculum refers to the structured set of courses, learning objectives
and instructional materials
