Abstract

Gold-mining activities have been demonstrated to result in significant environmental pollution by Hg, Pb, and Mn, causing serious concerns regarding the potential threat to the public health of neighboring populations around the world. Heavy metals disrupt cellular events including growth, proliferation, differentiation, damage-repairing processes, and apoptosis. This study aimed at investigating the effect of heavy metal contamination surrounding gold mining site to human body. Chickens of different age were collected from three different locations. Location A is non-gold mining area (Ilesha town) and serve as control while locations B and C are of gold mining areas Itamugudu and Araromi respectively. The Chickens were sacrificed and the serum was collected for biochemical analysis. Assay of serum total protein (TP) was measured using commercial assay kits (Randox laboratories, UK) according to the instructions of the manufacturer. The result of this study showed that the total protein level of the serum was significantly lower in samples Itamugudu and Araromi compared with sample Ilesha town. Lower level of total protein in chickens from gold mining areas compared to those from non-gold mining areas, could be due to various factors which can be environmental factors, dietary factors, stress and health conditions or genetic variability.
