ANTIOXIDANT AND AMYLASE INHIBITORY PROPERTIES OF AQUEUOUS EXTRACT OF ANNONA MURICATA LEAVES
Abstract
Oxidative stress, driven by excessive free radical production, contributes to chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders. This study investigated the phytochemicals and antioxidant potential of aqueous extracts of Annona muricata (soursop) leaves. The primary objective of this research is to assess the extract's ability to neutralize free radicals and mitigate oxidative stress. Using standard assays including DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), TAC (Total antioxidant capacity), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) and Reducing power. The extract exhibited strong radicalscavenging activity, indicating the extracts ability to mitigate oxidative stress. In addition, significant α-amylase inhibitory effects were observed, suggesting potential in the management of postprandial hyperglycaemia, which suggest the potential application of Annona muricata leaf extract as a natural antioxidant agent in the development of therapeutic interventions and dietary supplements. Results confirm its significant antioxidant efficacy, suggesting potential applications in managing oxidative stress–related disorders. Annona muricata leaves represent a promising source of natural antioxidants and antidiabetic agent for pharmacological and nutraceutical use.
