STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF MALARIA INCIDENCE USING THREE-WAY ANOVA (A CASE STUDY OF UMARU SHEHU ULTRA-MODERN HOSPITAL, MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE)
Abstract
This study analysed malaria incidence at Umaru Shehu Ultra-Modern Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State, using a Three-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine the effects of gender, age group, and month on malaria cases recorded in 2023. Data obtained from hospital records were analysed using Statistix 10.0 software. Results revealed that month and age group significantly influenced malaria occurrence (p < .001), while gender had no significant effect (p > .05). Interaction effects among month × age, month × gender, and age × gender were also significant, indicating that malaria prevalence is jointly influenced by environmental and demographic factors. The highest malaria cases occurred in August and September (rainy season), while the lowest occurred in March and April (dry season). The 11–20-year age group recorded the highest infection rate. The study concludes that malaria transmission in Maiduguri is seasonal and age-dependent, and recommends seasonal malaria preparedness, youth-focused health education, environmental sanitation, and sustained disease surveillance for effective control.
