Abstract

According to WHO, inflammatory diseases ranks one of the greatest threat to humankind and a major cause of death worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of the ethylacetate fraction of Triumfetta rhomboidea leaf. The extraction of the aqueous extract of the leaf was performed by cold Maceration and the extract was fractionated using the VLC method to obtain the ethylacetate fraction (EAFTR). Anti-inflammatory activity of the fraction was determined using Egg albumin denaturation assay, Heat induced hemolysis assay and trypsin inhibition assay. The result of the assays revealed that HIH and egg albumin denaturation assay was inhibited in a concentration dependent manner while Trypsin inhibition decreased with increase in concentration. The varying concentration (0.04-0.2 mg/ml) of EAFTR inhibited heat induced hemolysis between 65-90% and egg albumin denaturation between 50-65%. EAFTR demonstrated high anti-inflammatory activity than Diclofenac in HIH and trypsin inhibition assay. This study has demonstrated that EAFTR possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to manage and combat inflammatory diseases.
