DIFFUSION OF HEAVY METALS FROM CONDEMN OIL INSOIL ENVIRONMENT
Abstract
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of
lower concentration. Reactor was designed and constructed for the experiment. The reactor
was perforated at equal intervals in vertical direction that served as collection point of
samples every one-week interval for five times. The Condemn oil and loamy soil were
characterized for both heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and silver, also for
physiochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, sulphate and nitrate. It was discovered
that lead and cadmium were present in the condemn oil but silver was absent. The three
heavy metals under consideration were absent in loamy soil. The concentrations of the two
heavy metals present in the condemn oil were in increasing order of Pb > Cd. The
physiochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, sulphate and nitrate were absent in
condemn oil but were all present in the loamy soil with increasing order sulphate> nitrate >
temperature >pH. The concentration of heavy metals at a given time and height were
determined. Also, the temperature, pH, sulphate, and nitrate were tested to achieve the
objectives of the research. The concentrations of lead and cadmium decrease with increase in
time and height. with the concentration of lead higher than that of cadmium with a value of
5.19481 mg/kg. The functional parameters of lead and cadmium increase with increase in
time. The physiochemical parameters such as temperature, sulphate and nitrate decrease with
increase in time and height, but, inconsistent in pH. The Langmuir model lead had higher
and 2 with the values 46.08 mg/kg and 0.9354 respectively while, cadmium has
viii
higher in k with value of 1.2303, but, in Freundlich model lead had higher in k and 2,with
values of 1.3853 and 0.953 respectively while, cadmium had higher in n with value of -0.965
