Abstract

ABSTRACT The effects of ethanol extracts of andrographis panaculata leaves on biomarkers of alloxan induced diabetes in rats were carried out in this study. Andrographis paniculata leaves were freshly obtained from Ezeagu, L.G.A. Enugu State. The Andrographis paniculata leaves weere washed, dried and ground to powder and the powdered sample was macerated with absolute ethanol which was extracted after 48hours. Prior to the animal experiment, twenty-five (25) wistar albino rats weighing 85–300g were used for this study. The animals grouped into five were induced according to their body weight using standard alloxan monohydrate whereby group A served as control test. Analysis of the phytochemical constituents showed that Andrographis paniculata leaves contains alkaloids (24.8%), flavonoids (19.88%), saponins (6.51%), phenol (0.58%), cardiac glycoside (0.08%), steroids (8.54%), terpenoids (6.49%) and tannins (0.87%). The plant extract showed significant impact (p
