Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the impact of Naira Marley’s song “Am I a Yahoo Boy” on the attitudes and behaviours of undergraduates at Crescent University. It addresses the concern that popular music may influence youths to view internet fraud as acceptable or even admirable, reflecting a shift in moral values among young Nigerians. A quantitative research method was used, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to students. The study applied the Social Learning Theory to explain how repeated exposure to certain lyrics can shape behaviour, especially when artists are seen as role models. Findings revealed that many students were familiar with the song and believed it made internet fraud seem acceptable or fashionable. Those who frequently listened to similar music were more likely to show tolerant attitudes towards cybercrime and see it as a means of survival or success. The study recommends increased media literacy among students to help them critically engage with song lyrics. Artists should be more responsible with the messages in their music, and regulatory agencies should monitor and restrict content that glamorizes criminal behaviour.
